Meet James Walker, Computer One’s Managing Director
James is the founder of Computer One. Before turning his hand to IT in 2003, he managed several of Brisbane’s most well-known pubs and nightclubs. (Fun fact: he started the business in partnership with Greg Nunn, owner of Mountain Designs, and the two of them are still great friends.)
James is responsible for setting the strategic direction of Computer One and plays a keen role in the technical development of the company. He is often a key contributor to new projects for Computer One and clients alike.
Outside work, James is a keen sailor and this year he is competing in his 5th Sydney to Hobart as the Navigator aboard Quest (pending decisions over Sydney’s latest COVID outbreak).
If you’ve never competed in offshore yacht racing, the Navigator is responsible for making key decisions to take advantage of the prevailing weather conditions. He or she spends more time below deck rolling with the waves than anyone else. “Even the toughest stomach gives way after a few hours of doing that!” says James. “It can be a real test of endurance.”
Speaking of endurance, in 2019 he helped his team come third overall. That was AFTER breaking his wrist when a big wave hit halfway through the race!
Come back unharmed this year, skipper!
(Update: As you probably know by now, this year’s Sydney to Hobart has been cancelled for the first time in its 75-year history. But the countdown to next year’s race has started – only 368 days to go as at the time of update!)
